Worldwide spending on prescription drugs will slow in the next five years but will still surpass $1 trillion by 2014, according to pharmaceutical market research firm IMS Health.
Spending will rise 3 percent to 6 percent per year through 2015, with much of the growth coming in China, Brazil, Russia and India. By 2015, almost half of all pharmaceutical spending will go to low-cost generic drugs instead of costlier brand-name medications - which were once responsible for an overwhelming majority of drug costs.
